8-bit movie posters: "awesome" or silly?

8-bit posters, Nyman Ink, graphic design

We're been seeing a meme making its way across the web recently and since it's design-based, I wanted to share it with you. It started with American designer Eric Palmer who "pixelated" movie posters to make them look like video game illustrations from the 1980s.

News from our friends at SKETCH

Sketch, Nyman Ink, Toronto, Art
We're always happy to share good news about our friends. With that in mind, I thought I'd tell you about our neighbour SKETCH (a local Toronto not-for-profit that we supported in the last Nyman Ink Holiday Give-a-Thon). The organization has just relaunched and revamped its current capital campaign website: SKETCH is where the art is.

Pantone's making makeup now?

Pantone makeup

Pantone is, without a doubt, the world's most significant arbiter of what's cool in the world of colour. And makeup is all about colour. Still, I was surprised to hear that the iconic brand would be partnering with cosmetic retail giant Sephora to launch a Pantone makeup line that will highlight the 2012 colour of the year: Tangerine Tango

Pinterest changes terms of service

Pinterest changes terms of service

After my blog about Pinterest's somewhat concerning terms of service, I promptly deleted all my boards and stopped using the network. That may have been a harsh step, but Pinterest's terms of service were so disturbing, I felt strongly about taking a stand. And (believe it or not) Pinterest has now responded. Not only to me, of course, but to everyone who had concerns about its terms.

Salvador Dalí: master, surrealist ... logo designer?

Chupa Chups, Dali, Nyman Ink

Belinda Lanks, a senior editor at Co.Design, wrote a fun little piece about branding recently that I thought would be worth sharing with you. It falls under the "fun information you probably didn't know" category. She titled her piece "Salvador Dalí's Real Masterpiece: The Logo For Chupa Chups Lollipops" and in it, she reveals that surrealist master Salvador Dalí not only designed the iconic logo for Chupa Chups, he did it at a cafe table, in less than an hour.

Students (verb) charities: a cool contest

Student (Verb) Charities, contest, Nyman Ink, nonprofit

I recently heard about a cool contest through our friends over at Imagine Canada. It's called the Students (Verb) Charities contest (odd name, I know). But despite the strange moniker, I think those in the not-for-profit community will find it to be of interest.

Hipster logos

The Design Taxi daily newsletter almost always features something fun. Most recently, they called attention to an amusing new Tumbler entitled Hipster Branding.

Toyota gives free cars to NFPs, just not in Canada

Nyman Ink, Toyota, Canada, Nonprofit

So have you heard about Toyota giving away 100 cars to deserving not-for-profits? I just caught wind of it yesterday, via a press release in Digital Journal. At first, I was excited, but of course, as often happens, my excitement quickly turned to disappointment when I realized that the freebies were only on offer in the United States.

Sorry, my Canadian friends. No cars for you. At least . . . not yet. The initiative is a good one. So good, in fact, that I think it might be worthwhile to push Toyota to offer a similar program here in Canada. But before I get to that, let me explain the whole initiative.

Keep calm and carry on (and on, and on)

Keep Calm, Nyman Ink, London, WWII

I think it's fair to say that the design meme "Keep Calm and Carry On" has gone a little too far. What was once a fun, retro poster from WWII has become an endless internet design gag, with iterations from the clever to the ridiculous popping up all over the place.

Pantone, tarted up

Pantone, Tart, Nyman Ink

Been seeing this all over the web this week (in Design Taxi, on Design Boom, etc.) and wanted to re-share it with you in honour of Wordless Wednesday.
